Folksam horse insurance – Bas, Stor, A1 and A6

How Folksam’s riding-horse insurance works in practice: the difference between Bas and Stor, what A1 and A6 veterinary cover mean, A1/A2 life, excess and what is included – with links to Folksam’s site and policy wording.

11 min read·Updated August 2026

Folksam’s riding-horse insurance is built as two packages – Bas and Stor – and you choose the veterinary level (A1 or A6) and the life cover yourself. We walk through the product from Folksam’s own information, so you can see what actually differs between the levels before you compare with other insurers.

Policy wording and official links

Start here if you want the primary source straight away. The wording is what applies at a claim – this guide is a plain-language overview.

Product names and sums insured can change. Always check your current policy schedule and terms S11694 at Folksam.

Bas or Stor – how the packages are built

Folksam splits riding-horse insurance into two scopes. The difference is mainly how much is included in the veterinary cover – not whether the horse is “too good” or “too ordinary” for one package or the other.

In short

Bas = you assemble the core cover yourself. Stor = the same choice of A1/A6 and sums, plus extended veterinary cover and extra abdominal surgery. Many who want more complete protection choose Stor – but Bas can be enough if you deliberately want to stay with the core.

Veterinary cover A1 vs A6 – the decisive difference

Both A1 and A6 can be taken out with 40 000, 80 000 or 125 000 kronor as an annual sum. The difference sits in which diagnoses and injuries are paid for – not in the sum steps.

Veterinärvård A1

Folksam’s more comprehensive veterinary insurance. It pays for examination, treatment and care carried out by a vet after an accident or illness, up to the chosen sum. This is the level people usually mean when they talk about “full” veterinary cover at Folksam.

Veterinärvård A6

A narrower veterinary policy that covers many common injuries and illnesses – but not, for example, lameness and wear-and-tear injuries. The full diagnosis list is in the wording. A6 can suit you if you want a lower premium and knowingly accept the gaps, especially around lameness.

Lameness is the deciding factor

Lameness is among the most common reasons for a horse to see a vet. If you want cover for a lameness work-up and joint/tendon problems, A1 is the relevant choice – not A6. Read the diagnosis list in the wording before you take out A6.

Life cover A1 and limited life A2

Livförsäkring A1

Folksam’s most comprehensive life cover for a horse. The sum can be paid if the horse dies, goes missing or is stolen. It also applies if the horse becomes so ill or injured that it loses its future usefulness, or has to be euthanised. On loss of use there is the option of a partial payout.

Begränsad livförsäkring A2

A narrower life cover. A payout can be made if the horse dies, goes missing/is stolen in Sweden, has to be euthanised on veterinary advice for a severe illness, or is so badly injured in an accident that continued treatment will not allow it to live on. There are clear exclusions – including lameness, developmental disorders, osteochondrosis, chronic respiratory disease and injuries to tendons, the suspensory ligament and other ligaments. The exclusions also apply if the horse has to be euthanised on animal-welfare grounds.

A1 life vs A2 life

If you want loss of use and a broader life cover: look at A1. If you mainly want a payout on death/acute catastrophe at a lower cost: A2 can be relevant – but read the exclusions carefully.

Excess, waiting period and age

RuleAccording to Folksam riding horse
Fixed excess3 500, 5 000 or 7 000 kr
Percentage excess25 % of the remaining cost
Excess period150 days from the first payable cost – the fixed excess is paid once per period
Excess on lifeNone
Waiting period20 days on a new policy if the horse has not been insured before
No waiting periodAccident through sudden external trauma; direct transfer from another insurer/another policyholder
Age at taking out (riding horse)From birth up to and including 17 years
Broodmare (breeding)From the year the mare turns 3 up to and including the year she turns 20
Source: Folksam riding-horse insurance. Foals have special waiting-period rules – see the wording.

Example from Folksam: with several colic visits within 150 days you pay the fixed excess only once, and the percentage part on the costs. If you have Ridhäst Stor with A1 80 000 kr there is also extra room for abdominal surgery up to 50 000 kr once the veterinary sum is used up.

What else is included?

  • Djurens vårdguide – advice and guidance before/at a vet visit
  • Personal accident cover – if an insured horse injures a person (included in the packages)
  • Direct settlement at the clinic – you often pay only the excess on the spot (weekdays, according to Folksam’s hours)
  • 10 % multi-policy discount on many policies if you have home insurance with Folksam

Who is Folksam for?

Folksam suits you if you want a clear package choice (Bas/Stor), three concrete veterinary sums and the ability to steer the scope via A1/A6 and A1/A2 life. Ridhäst Stor with A1 is the set-up that gives the most complete cover in Folksam’s riding-horse line – including rehab, medication, therapeutic shoeing and extra abdominal surgery.

Strengths and limitations (neutral)
  • Clear structure: Bas/Stor + A1/A6 + A1/A2
  • Stor includes practical items many cheaper packages lack (rehab, medication, therapeutic shoeing, travel, extra abdominal surgery)
  • 150-day excess period – useful when care is recurring
  • Maximum 125 000 kr in veterinary cover – compare with insurers that offer a higher ceiling if you want more headroom
  • A6 and A2 are deliberately narrower – fine if you understand the gaps, wrong if you think they are as broad as A1
  • New policies up to and including 17 years for a riding horse

In practice: take out, keep, switch

On a transfer from another insurer with equivalent cover, the waiting period can fall away according to Folksam. Apply and get a decision first – do not cancel the old policy until the new one starts the same day. If you need to cut the premium: switch A1→A6 or Stor→Bas only if you truly understand what drops out. Never create a break in cover.

A gap = treated as a new policy

A gap can mean a new waiting period and reservations for conditions that were already there – even if the horse is healthy right now.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Folksam Bas and Stor?

Both can have the same veterinary sums (40/80/125 000 kr) and you choose A1 or A6. Stor adds extended cover (including rehab, medication, therapeutic shoeing, vet travel, animal ambulance) and extra payout for abdominal surgery up to 50 000 kr once the maximum has been reached.

What do A1 and A6 veterinary cover mean?

A1 is the more comprehensive veterinary cover for illness and accident. A6 covers many common injuries and illnesses but not, for example, lameness and wear-and-tear injuries – see the diagnosis list in the wording.

What is A1 life versus A2 life?

A1 is the broader life cover and can also pay on loss of use (sometimes a partial payout). A2 is limited life cover with several exclusions, including lameness and certain tendon/ligament/respiratory problems.

How high is the excess with Folksam?

A fixed excess of 3 500, 5 000 or 7 000 kronor plus 25 % variable. The fixed excess is paid once per 150-day period. Life cover has no excess.

Where do I find Folksam’s terms?
