How Dunstan’s horse insurance works in practice: the difference between Grund, Special and Premium veterinary care, excess of 3 500 + 25 % or 0 + 50 %, life/loss of use, Trygghetsgaranti and points – with links to Dunstan and the terms.
Dunstan is a horse-focused insurer (underwritten by HDI, distributed by Dunstan AB) with many product variants. For a riding horse it comes down, in practice, to three veterinary-care levels – Grund, Special and Premium – plus optional life/loss of use. This guide sets out what actually separates the levels, using Dunstan’s own information and terms from 2026-04-01.
Start here if you want the primary source. The wording is what applies at a claim – this guide is a plain-language overview.
Dunstan stands out with two clear excess models. You choose how much risk you keep when a claim happens – and that feeds into the size of the premium.
| Rule | According to Dunstan |
|---|---|
| Option 1 | 3 500 kr fixed + 25 % variable. The fixed excess is paid once per policy year |
| Option 2 | 0 kr fixed + 50 % variable – you always pay half of every payable cost |
| Excess period | 365 days (follows the policy period) at 3 500 + 25 % |
| Maximum veterinary sum insured | 50 000 / 100 000 / 150 000 kr per policy year |
| Waiting period | 20 days on a new policy (foals: 5 days). Also applies when cover is upgraded |
| No waiting period (among others) | Acute wounds, acute colic, shipping fever (plus external trauma / pleurisy according to the pre-purchase information) |
Run the numbers on a colic or a lameness work-up before you choose. The 50 % model can look cheap month to month, but it becomes expensive if the horse needs several larger treatments in the same year.
Life and loss of use are taken out separately and follow the same naming logic: Premium (broadest), Special (diagnosis list), Breeding (stud) and Grund Liv (narrowest – death immediately connected to injury/illness). There is also Katastrof (fire, traffic, drowning and similar).
When you move from another Swedish insurer, Dunstan can take over equivalent or wider cover without a new waiting period – if you provide the previous cover, claims history and a health declaration.
Dunstan can suit you if you want a horse-centred insurer, a choice of two excess models and points earned through preventive work. Premium is the package that comes closest to complete riding-horse cover. Special and Grund are deliberately narrower – fine for a budget if you understand the gaps, wrong if you think lameness is always included.
If you switch to Dunstan: make sure the new cover is in force before the old one ends. Ask for confirmation that the waiting period and hidden defects (Trygghetsgaranti) transfer when that applies. If you step down from Premium to Special to save money: expect lameness and many movement problems to fall away.
Grund covers only traumatic fractures/fissures, acute wounds from external trauma and acute colic. Special pays for just over 60 specified diagnoses but not lameness, the back or tendons/ligaments. Premium is the broadest veterinary care and includes, among other things, rehab up to 10 000 kr and dental care up to 20 000 kr. The maximum sum can be 50 / 100 / 150 000 kr.
You choose 3 500 kr + 25 % (fixed part once per policy year, 365-day period) or 0 kr + 50 % (always half the cost). The premium is often lower with the 50 % option, but your outlay at a claim is higher.
No. According to the product fact sheet for Special Veterinärvård, lameness, movement disorders, back disease, skeletal disease of the cervical and thoracic spine, and treatment of tendons, suspensory ligament or ligaments are not paid. For that you need Premium (or an equivalent broad product).
Veterinary care can be taken out or upgraded up to and including the calendar year the horse turns 15. If the horse already has cover: continuity is the priority. Life cover can, according to Dunstan, be taken out until the year the horse turns 16; the sum is then reduced in steps.
Dunstan can keep hidden-defect cover on a move if they take over equivalent protection from another insurer, or if the horse has been insured with Dunstan from no later than 30 days of age without a break. Foetuses and foals insured with Dunstan are covered automatically according to their information.
