Dina Försäkringar horse insurance – Hel and Begränsad

How Dina Försäkringar’s horse insurance works in practice: the difference between Hel and Begränsad veterinary care and life cover, sums, excess, medicine/rehab included, the dental add-on and Foster & föl – with links to Dina and Villkor HÄST 2025.

12 min read·Updated August 2026

Dina Försäkringar is a network of local customer-owned companies (Göta, Mitt, Nord, Väst, Syd and others) with shared horse terms. Cover is built simply: Hel or Begränsad veterinary care, plus optional Hel or Begränsad life, and add-ons for dental care and Foster & föl. This guide walks through the products from Dina’s pages and Villkor HÄST 2025 (in force from 2025-06-01).

Policy wording and official links

Start here if you want the primary source. The wording is what applies at a claim – this guide is a plain-language overview. Policies and advice go through your local Dina company.

  • Dina – Horse insurance (home page)
  • Dina – Life insurance horse
  • Villkor HÄST 2025 (PDF, from 2025-06-01)

Read the wording before you take out cover

Sums and excess sit in the policy schedule. The Dina company that issued the schedule is normally responsible for the cover. Always check the current schedule and Villkor HÄST 2025.

Hel or Begränsad – how veterinary care differs

Dina stresses that on Hel you do not buy extra cover for lameness, medicine or rehab – they are included. Begränsad is deliberately narrow: colic, fracture and acute wounds.

In short

A riding horse that needs lameness, medicine and rehab: Hel. Begränsad sits in the same family as Agria’s Enkel or Sveland’s Mini – fine for a budget if you understand the gaps, wrong if you think a lameness work-up is included.

Sums, excess and waiting period

RuleAccording to Dina
Maximum veterinary sum insured40 000 / 80 000 / 120 000 kr per year
Fixed excess2 500 / 5 000 / 7 500 kr
Percentage excess25 %
Excess periodSix months – one fixed excess regardless of the number of diagnoses in the period
Waiting period20 days for illness (foals under 30 days: 5). Also applies when you upgrade
No waiting period (among others)Wounds/fracture from external trauma, colic, shipping fever, pleurisy, traffic/fire/drowning, a transfer with at least the same cover
Extra veterinary careIf the sum is used up you can buy a new sum for new injuries (20 days’ waiting period) until the main renewal date
Example from Dina (wound 65 000 kr, fixed 2 500 + 25 %): you pay 2 500 + 15 625 = 18 125 kr, the insurer 46 875 kr (within the ceiling).
Lameness: rest – not a higher excess

In the current terms (2025-06) the percentage excess is 25 % even for lameness and the back. Sufficient rest as recommended by the vet is required, though – otherwise the settlement can be reduced. Older comparisons that mentioned a higher percentage excess for lameness therefore do not match Villkor HÄST 2025.

Life: Hel or Begränsad

Life is an optional add-on. Hel liv & användbarhet pays on death/euthanasia and permanently lost usefulness, plus a partial settlement if the horse can live on. Begränsad liv is narrower – mainly accident and acute illness without previous symptoms.

  • Can be taken out from the second day of life up to and including the year the horse turns 15
  • No excess on life cover
  • The sum is reduced by 20 % a year from age 16, never below 5 000 kr
  • Life cover ends at the renewal date in the year the horse turns 25 – veterinary care can continue
  • Partial settlement (Hel): 80 % of the part of the sum that exceeds 15 000 kr, after marking in the passport
  • Prior approval for a planned euthanasia – required for settlement (exception: immediate euthanasia on animal-welfare grounds)
  • Euthanasia because of dental disease requires the dental add-on for a life settlement

Dental care, Foster & föl, hidden defects

  • Dental add-on: only with Hel veterinary care – examination/treatment after accident or illness (not preventive). Maximum sum as on the policy schedule; the same excess model as veterinary care
  • Foster & föl: from 40 days of pregnancy; settlement for abortion/lost foal + veterinary care for the foal for 30 days
  • A foal of a mare with Hel is covered by the mare’s veterinary care for up to 30 days
  • Hidden defects: if the horse has been continuously insured for hidden defects since 30 days of age with at least equivalent cover – ends in the calendar year the horse turns 10
  • FirstVet is included in veterinary care for a payable injury

Trotting, racing and breeding – special exclusions

You can take out Hel for a trotting, racing or breeding horse as well, but the use of the horse drives the exclusions. After 1 January in the year a trotting/racing/monté horse turns two, Hel applies with exclusions for, among other things, lameness (except external trauma and OC under the terms), the back and chronic respiratory disease. Breeding without riding/driving has similar exclusions for lameness/back. Pony trotting and Arabian racehorses are excepted from the trotting/racing rule.

Who is Dina for?

Dina can suit you if you want a local contact, Hel with medicine and rehab built in (without Sveland-style add-ons), a six-month excess period and the option of keeping veterinary care for life. The ceiling of 120 000 kr is lower than Agria Extra (160 000) and Dunstan/Sveland (150 000) – weigh that in if you want the highest possible cap.

Strengths and limitations (neutral)
  • Hel includes lameness, medicine 15k and rehab 15k
  • A clear Hel/Begränsad model for both veterinary care and life
  • Six-month excess period; chosen fixed excess 2 500–7 500 kr
  • Veterinary care can be kept for life; the sum is not reduced with age
  • A dental add-on and Foster & föl are available
  • Maximum 120 000 kr – lower than several competitors’ top level
  • New life cover only up to the year the horse turns 15
  • Hidden-defect cover ends at 10

In practice: take out, keep, switch

Contact your local Dina company for a quote and to take out cover. On a switch: the waiting period falls away on a transfer with at least the same cover. Apply first, cancel afterwards. If you step down from Hel to Begränsad: lameness, medicine and rehab disappear.

A gap = treated as a new policy

A break can restart the waiting period and bring reservations for anything that has shown before. Paying late after the policy has ended is treated as a new application – with a new waiting period and the risk of new restrictions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Hel and Begränsad veterinary care at Dina?

Hel covers illness and accident including lameness, medicine and rehab (up to 15 000 kr each). Begränsad pays only for traumatic fractures/fissures, acute colic/abdominal surgery and acute wounds from external trauma. Maximum sum on both: 40 / 80 / 120 000 kr.

How high is the excess?

A fixed 2 500, 5 000 or 7 500 kronor plus 25 % variable. The excess period is six months – the fixed part is paid once per period regardless of the number of diagnoses.

Does Dina have a higher excess specifically for lameness?

No, not according to Villkor HÄST 2025. The percentage excess is 25 % even for lameness and the back. Sufficient rest as advised by the vet is required, though – otherwise the settlement can be reduced.

Are medicine and rehab included?

Yes, in Hel veterinary care – up to 15 000 kronor a year each. They are not included in Begränsad. Dental care is a separate add-on to Hel.

Can I insure an older horse?

Veterinary care can be kept for life. Life cover can be taken out up to and including the year the horse turns 15 and runs until age 25 (with an annual reduction from 16).

Is Dina the same company everywhere?

Dina is a network of local insurers with shared horse terms. The company named on your policy schedule is responsible for the cover – advice and handling are local.
