A clear overview of unborn-foal and foal insurance: when you can take it out, what is covered, veterinary care for the newborn foal, and how the insurers differ – Folksam, Agria, If, Dunstan, Sveland and Dina.
Once the mare is in foal, insurance is about more than her own veterinary cover. Unborn-foal and foal insurance (sometimes called Vänta föl) typically protects against a lost foetus or a lost foal, and often includes veterinary care for the foal in its first weeks of life – without using up the mare’s own policy. This guide is a neutral briefing: no insurer is named the winner. The figures are indicative values from the companies’ public pages – always check the current terms before you take out cover.
The product usually covers two phases in the same package:
Almost every insurer requires the mare to be a certain age at covering (often around 3–21/22 years) and that pregnancy is confirmed. The difference that most often decides the timing is from which day of gestation the product may be taken out – and how late it can still be done.
| Insurer | Earliest | Latest / period of cover | Mare’s age (at covering) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folksam (Vänta föl) | 25th day of gestation | Until the 300th day; cover until the foal is 30 days old | 3–21 years |
| Agria (Foster & föl) | 30th day of gestation | No later than 30 days before the expected foaling date | 3–22 years |
| Sveland (Fosterförsäkring) | 30 days of pregnancy | No later than 25 days before expected foaling | See terms |
| If (Foster- och föl) | 40th day of gestation | No later than 300 days of pregnancy; until the foal is 30 days old | 3–21 years |
| Dina (Foster & föl) | 40 days of pregnancy | Cover before foaling + 30 days after | See terms / local company |
| Dunstan (Foster & föl / Safe Start) | Approx. the 40th day of gestation | Classic package until the foal’s 30th day; Safe Start Premium up to the first birthday | See terms |

* At Agria: for a lost foetus, a pregnancy examination is required that must not have been carried out earlier than the day the policy was taken out.
The unborn-foal and foal package ends after a short time (often 30 days). The foal then needs its own horse insurance. Several insurers offer a waiting-period-free switch if you take out cover within that window and protection has been continuous.
Ask for a written quotation and read the pre-contract information and the terms side by side. The “best” product is the one that matches where you are in the pregnancy, your covering costs and how you plan to insure the foal afterwards – and that you actually take out in time.
As soon as the mare is confirmed in foal and you are inside the insurer’s permitted window (from the 25th to the 40th day depending on the company). Do not wait until the last possible day – certificates and processing take time.
Not always. Sveland, for example, states that the mare does not need to already be insured with them. Other insurers may have other ties – read the terms and ask when you request a quotation.
Yes. The page on foals and young horses applies after birth. Foster & föl / Safe Start is taken out during pregnancy from around the 40th day – see dunstan.se/hastforsakring/foster-fol/.
The package usually only lasts a short time (for example 30 days). Take out the foal’s own horse insurance in time – several insurers offer a waiting-period-free switch if cover has been continuous.
None is objectively best for everyone. Compare the earliest start date, the life sum, the veterinary cap for the foal, the excess and how the switch to the foal’s own insurance works – and choose from your own situation.
